Upgrading electrical sub and main panels allow more circuit capability

Installing a new panel is typically something that is required when needing to add more circuits for those additional home or business power loads. Another reason could be, older electrical panels can develop internal damage beyond safe operation, based upon several decades of a slow deterioration based on the reaction of micro arcing at the contact points between the circuit breaker and the panel bussing, once this happens the conductive properties are no longer sufficient to continue safe operation which can lead to extreme conditions of interior panel issues related to the excessive heat and potential meltdown. When replacing an electrical metered panel the first required step is calling your electric utility company and simply ask for what is called a " meter spot ", from there a free scheduled appointment will be made and a utility representative will stop by usually within a 7-10 day window for confirming the location is still compliant for the upgraded panel location, normally there is no need to relocate the present location. The next step is to purchase the electrical permit in which the electrical contractor usually includes within the estimate.

Once the utility confirms the location is approved and the permit has been purchased the next step is scheduling the installation process. The installation process involves upgrading the grounding system by assuring the homes water and gas lines are adequately bonded to the earth from potential lighting surges that can travel on a utility line for miles within the blink of an eye.

Bonding the water and gas lines are intended to protect such systems from retaining any residual surge from inside or outside the residence, while connected to the true relief path being an electrode ground which consists of 2 copper earth ground rods driven into the earth which is the actual direct path of any subjected overcurrent condition. Once the necessary grounding and bonding is achieved the next step is to remove the older panel and replace with the newer updated breaker panel, which is when the power of the home is disconnected for anywhere from 4-6 hours. The final step is labeling of the circuits and upon completion, call the city inspector for their approval. The upgrading time frame can take anywhere from 3-5 days which also includes a licensed party to resurface and texture the stucco or similar surfaces.
