Transfer switching helps maintain power during utility outages

Transfer switches are continually becoming more popular within residential homes, with power outages being more common, people have started looking closer at other methods of maintaining the valuable electricity to their household systems. Personally I think the most budget friendly method of providing short term backup power is by investing into a portable generator, It seems the portable generator is much easier to maintain and if or when necessary to replace such a unit is a fraction of the cost of the much larger long term pad mounted models. Either system is great but it depends on the budget available, most importantly the key is getting the valued circuits within your panel re energized when the utility grid is down. Obviously the point of a transfer switch is to safely move from the utility electrical source to the generated source brought on by propane, gasoline or natural gas. Most common portable generator recommended would be a 50 amp 240 v. , with that 12000 watts you could easily operate many valuable home circuits focusing on kitchen appliances, washer dryer, basic household receptacles and lighting.

Keep in mind during such a power outage it would be wise to limit the overall capability of the electrical panel, meaning using the pool, spa or air conditioner can probably be used independently or better yet just hold off during the troublesome outage.
